We caught up with Christine Green of Crafting at the Cottage to talk to her about Paper Cutting, and how she uses crafting to inspire and teach others.

Who is Christine Green?

I am a graphic designer by trade with a passion for typography, decorative cutouts, patchwork, animation, teaching and inspiring others to have a go. I spent 13 years at the BBC creating opening title sequences, went freelance, and then retrained as a teacher. I now run numerous courses on creative paper cutting and patchworking, attend crafting events demonstrating paper cutting and have a range of products that feature my paper cuts which I sell where ever I go and online.

What does your day consist of?

My days vary from being very full on; packing the car, driving to a course, setting up, teaching, repacking car and driving home - to very quiet; coffee and pottering and contemplating what next.

Tell us a little bit about Papercutting.

I was on a rather extended trip to Canada when I taught myself paper cutting - I needed to send birthday cards and gifts home and these hand-cut panels were perfect. I love letters and the combination of letters and a paper cutting is perfect. There’s a clarity you get with a cut line as opposed to a drawn one and if the o’s aren’t perfect or there’s a slight wobble where it should be straight that all adds to the hand crafted, artisan aspect of what I do. It’s a low cost, highly creative craft which students find enjoyable and rewarding.

What is Crafting at the Cottage?

Crafting at the Cottage is the name I use for my ‘company’, I say company but it’s just me sitting in my cottage crafting! Sometimes I have small groups of students come and sit around the dining table and make things and enjoy an escape to the country.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs?

I love playing with words and letters and I also have a fondness for felines. My first greetings card was a quote from Colette, ‘There are no ordinary cats’ and it sold out very quickly, so my designs are a mix of cat quotes, lines from Shakespeare and a few of my own observations.

Do you have any exciting projects on the horizon?

I never know what’s around the corner project wise but I do my best to make it exciting for me and my client whatever it is.

Where can we buy your lovely products?

You can buy my cards, prints, bags and tea towels from my website.
